Despite the title, Rankin/Bass’ adaptation of The Return of the King is not the conclusion to 1978’s animated Lord of the Rings film. Attempting to be a direct sequel to 1977’s animated The Hobbit, this ABC network television special brings back the character designs and voice cast from that first show. Can the story of The Return of the King be told without the previous two volumes, or does this work as an unofficial conclusion to Ralph Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings?
